How Azithromycin Works

Azithromycin is a subclass of macrolide antibiotics known as an azalide. It prevents bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby interfering with microbial protein synthesis (bacteriostatic activity).

Gram-Negative Activity: Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Legionella pneumophila.
Atypical Bacteria: Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum.

Primary Clinical Indications

Community Pneumonia Mild to moderate CAP caused by Mycoplasma or Strep. pneumoniae.
Acute Sinusitis & Throat Bacterial pharyngitis/tonsillitis and acute bacterial sinusitis.
Otitis Media Acute middle ear infections in pediatric patients (≥6 months).
Chlamydia & Urethritis Uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis.
